03: Education, Community and Equality with Michael Warren

Michael Warren, a foster kid who faced unimaginable obstacles throughout his youth, beat the odds in life. In this episode of Light Up, he shares the experiences that lit the fire beneath his passion for social justice, he talks about his calling to listen, serve, educate and love ALL people, especially disadvantaged kids and he gives thanks to the people in his life who’ve chosen to believe in him.

A graduate of Pittsburgh CAPA high school, Michael was deeply inspired by his middle school music teacher, Mr. Henry Biggs, to study music and education. Michael graduated with a Masters in Education from Duquesne University in 2018 and now, he’s pursuing his Ph. D. in Educational Leadership with a focus in social justice.

Michael is currently Director of Choirs at Avonworth School District for grades 5-12, he serves as Minister of Music at various churches in the city of Pittsburgh, he sings the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Penguins and he’s performed live on stage with Hamilton’s Leslie Odom Jr. In December, 2019 he released his very own Christmas album, A Peace of Christmas and now he’s in the process of recording a brand new, “Sunday Morning” album with his long time friend and producer, Virgil Richmond.

Michael will celebrate two years of marriage on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 to his loving and supportive wife, Kayla Warren who’s working to become a doctor. They bough a home in the Sheraden – West End area back in November, 2019 and together, they are unstoppable!!!
